Top 100 twitter users by job

Because we love playing around with data and we wanted to see what the top 100 twitter users do for a living we compiled the following graph showing the top 100 twitter user by job category. For source data we used the top 100 rankings from twitterholic on March 31, 2009. For this post, “top 100″ is defined as twitter users with the largest number of followers. Although we believe there are better metrics to use, this was the easiest to quantify.

The results:

Athlete  – 3%
Author/Speaker – 5%
Blogger/Journalist – 13%
Business/Technology – 10%
Company/Organization – 14%
Musician – 14%
News Source – 9%
Other – 1%
Politician – 5%
TV/Film Personality – 26%

If we simplify the categories, combining athletes, author/speakers, musicians and TV/Film personalities into one category titled “celebrities” we get 48% of the top 100 users.

As twitter gains popularity and more celebrities start to use twitter as a method of communication the top 100 list will begin to look more like an issue of US weekly and less a who’s who in the social media tech space.

Some things to note:
Business/Technology was the hardest group to define. Essentially this group is made up of individuals that have started or built companies (usually technology) and either sold them, are still running them or onto their next project. They may also be bloggers but their claim to fame (and fortune) was made in the business technology world. Think Kevin Rose or Jack Dorsey.

Company/Organization represents a shared company twitter account or an account run by one specific person that is representing that company.
