Do you still need a corporate website?

Still think you need a corporate website to promote your product? Glaceau doesn’t think so or at least they are heavily promoting their facebook company page over the actual Vitamin Water website. The latest television spots caused quite a response when viewers noticed they contained a URL to the facebook.com/vitaminwater page instead of the expected company URL.
I believe this is a smart move on the part of Glaceau. For one thing, their corporate page is really just an online brochure, sure you can download wallpapers and watch commercials but it’s not like you can buy the product through the web or interact with other people and most of all, you’d probably only visit the website once (if at all). That’s why directing traffic to the facebook page makes so much sense. People are already going to facebook, you’re not requiring them to do anything they normally wouldn’t. Plus you’re tapping into the largest online community and giving your product a chance to be seen and shared by millions.
So far the campaign appears to be working. As of today Vitamin Water’s main facebook page has 271,367 fans and the Vitamin Water 10 page has 14,102 fans. I wonder how many of those people have visited the Glaceau website.
Here is one of the commercials, wait for the URL at the end.
Side note: The Glaceau website, while beautifully appealing is an SEO nightmare, entirely flash with a single URL and title tag…no wonder why the website is the fourth organic result on Google for “Vitamin Water 10″.

Good post; drafting my idea, you dog? Truly, I think we are in the twilight of the corporate website. I guess you’ll need to be a co-author on my paper now.
